97: Build A Timeless Wardrobe

One of the first steps to building a timeless wardrobe is to choose clothes that look great on you; flattering necklines are key because they bring attention to your face and decolletage. You don’t necessarily have to wear black to get the chic effect, although darker colors are the most slimming.  Go monochromatic from the neck down for maximum flattery. A streamlined color choice eliminates the too many focal points…there’s babydolls, stilettos, overly descriptive handbags.Layered looks are more than just about covering up. Instead, three-piece dressing (tank/jacket/pant, tank/skirt/shawl, etc.) is all about creating movement in clothing, an essential component of timeless style. Instead of baggy, shapeless clothing to hide in, go for things that will create “an illusion of fit.” This could be in the versatile Gigi wrap (pictured), sashes or obis. It’s all about style, not size, age or economic status; pieces like basic black which, with a switch of shoes and accessories — say, Chanel sneakers for daytime or slingbacks and pearls for evening — can fit into any crowd.  The building blocks of a timeless wardrobe may be flattering basics, but it’s the extras that will polish your total look.  No-fail chic accents include red lipstick (which is part of the company logo), sunglasses and pearls. Just because you are trying to build a timeless wardrobe that withstands the fads, it doesn’t mean you can’t try out new trends. The key is to put your money into trendy accessories. Fashion expert’s have sais that 90% of women today shouldn’t follow the trends. Although everybody wanted to wear trendy, most of these looks only work on very young women.
